P.088 Family identified barriers to accessing services for children with attention deficits and neurodevelopmental disorders

Background: Obtaining early intervention services is crucial for improving outcomes in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as Autism or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Identifying barriers accessing the healthcare system necessary to optimize Patient and Family-Centered Care approach. Methods: Parents of an NDD co-occurring attention deficits were recruited from Neurodevelopmental Clinic at Alberta Children’s Hospital. completed a semi-structured interview Barriers Accessing Services (BAS) questionnaire. Results: Nine families participated representing 10 children. Interviews evenly spread between biological mothers fathers. All had deficits; 4 also diagnosed 5 “other” neurologic conditions. The two most identified by (67%) through BAS questionnaire “Didn’t know where find help” “Steps seek help are too overwhelming”, consistent information obtained interview. Conclusions: Children often have complex medical needs. challenges initiating, navigating many steps involved secure services. We will collect more determine how needs can become accessible.
